A partir de 1989, América Latina vivió una verdadera revolución en materia de arbitraje con la puesta en marcha de reformas en los marcos legales de los principales países de la región y la celebración de tratados de protección de inversión. Después de algunos años de euforia, las denuncias del Convenio CIADI por parte de Bolivia, Ecuador y Venezuela sonaron como el presagio del regreso de la anti-gua hostilidad latinoamericana hacia al arbitraje. Con todo, las estadísticas muestran crecimiento en la práctica de países como México, Brasil, Perú y Colombia. Nuevas revisiones legislativas tuvieron lugar y otras están en marcha. Así, puede parecer que, pese a algunos percances, no hay crisis en el arbitraje latinoamericano.

As of 1989, Latin America witnessed a true revolution in the field of arbitration with the implementation of reforms in the legal framework of most of the significant countries of the region and the execution of investment protection treaties. However, within a few years of eupho-ria, the denunciation of the ICSID Convention by Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela, sounded as the prelude of the return of the old Latin American hostility towards arbitration. Yet, statistics show growth in the practice of other countries, such as Mexico, Brazil, Peru and Colombia. New legislative revisions took place, whilst other are cur-rently in progress. Therefore, in spite of some setbacks, it seems that arbitration in Latin America is not going through a crisis.
