El concepto de «norma lingüística» y la tarea de las Academias El concepto de «norma lingüística» presenta algunos rasgos particulares que lo diferencian de la noción tradicional de «norma», tal como se entiende en derecho y en otras disciplinas. El trabajo de los lingüistas es mayoritariamente teórico y descriptivo. La Real Academia Española y la Asociación de Academias no pueden legislar, en el sentido en que lo hacen los parlamentarios, puesto que ello equivaldría a determinar las propiedades léxicas y gramaticales que el idioma ha de tener. Pueden, sin embargo, establecer las opciones que se consideran más prestigiosas apoyándose en criterios sociolingüísticos objetivos. Ello las lleva a recomendar, como hacen, el uso de unas construcciones y a considerar incorrecto el de otras. Las diferentes interpretaciones que recibe la noción de «norma», dentro y fuera de la lingüística, han contribuido a que esta cuestión haya suscitado no poca controversia.

The concept of «linguistic norm» and the task of the Academies The concept of «linguistic norm» has some particular features that differentiate it from the traditional notion of «norm», as it is understood in the study of Law and in other disciplines. The role of the linguists is mostly theoretical and descriptive. The Spanish Royal Academy of Language and the Association of Academies cannot legislate, as lawmakers do in parliament, as this would be tantamount to determining the lexical and grammatical characteristics that a language should have. They can, however, decide on the options that they consider most appropriate, based on objective sociological and linguistic criteria. This leads these institutions to recommend, as they do, the use of certain constructions, and to consider others as incorrect. The different interpretations of the concept of «norm», both within and outside linguistic context, have contributed to raising much controversy concerning this question.
