La destrucción del patrimonio histórico producida por los conflictos en oriente próximo, cuyo máximo exponente es la pérdida de monumentos milenarios como las ciudades de Palmira y Alepo en Siria o Nínive en Irak, ha vuelto a colocar en primer plano el problema de la destrucción del patrimonio en situaciones de conflicto y conduce a hablar de una verdadera limpieza cultural destinada a borrar la memoria cultural común y el pasado histórico de estas regiones. Esta destrucción sin precedentes ha motivado la adopción de una estrategia global destinada a reforzar el papel de la UNESCO. Esta estrategia se plantea desde un doble ángulo: el reforzamiento de las capacidades de los Estados para prevenir, mitigar y reconstruir los daños, por un lado, y la incorporación de la protección de la cultura en la acción humanitaria, las estrategias de seguridad y los procesos de consolidación de la paz, por otro. 

The destruction of historical heritage sites caused by the conflicts in the Middle East, represented by the loss of ancient monuments such as the cities of Palmyra and Aleppo in Syria and Nineveh in Iraq, highlights the challenge of protecting historical heritage in events of armed conflict and lead to talk about an actual cultural cleansing aimed at erasing the collective cultural memory and historical past of these regions. This unprecedented destruction has led to the adoption of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the role of UNESCO. This strategy is based on two main axes: strengthening state capacity to prevent, mitigate and rebuild the damage, on the one hand, and incorporating culture protection into humanitarian action, security strategies and peace consolidation processes, on the other hand.
