Este artículo presenta las causas y el origen de los cambios acontecidos en el ejercicio de la abogacía durante los últimos años y enumera los factores que anunciaban dichos cambios y sus claves esenciales. Además, describe las funciones de la abogacía y la distingue de otras profesiones jurídicas, exponiendo las circunstancias que afectan a la profesión de abogado. Finalmente, a la vista de las tendencias y características actuales de esta profesión, plantea los posibles resultados de estos cambios y su repercusión sobre la abogacía, así como la responsabilidad social de los abogados en la promoción de dichos cambios en el futuro.

This article describes the grounds and the origin of the changes in the practice of law during the last years and lists the different factors which anticipated these changes and their key elements. In addition, it also describes the functions of the practice of law, distinguishes between this activity and other law-related professions and presents the circumstances which are affecting the profession of lawyer. Finally, bearing in mind the current tendencies and characteristics of this profession, the article considers the possible results of these changes and their impact on the practice of law in the next years, as well as the social responsibility of lawyers in promoting such changes in the future.
