Para que la informática pueda funcionar, como es sabido, es preciso un hardware, pero también un software. Éste puede ser de diversas modalidades, a saber: software propietario o software libre. Este último debe discernirse de figuras relativamente similares con las que tiende a confundirse. En el presente artículo, nos referiremos al concepto del software libre, el movimiento en el que se integra, sin perder de vista sus ventajas e inconvenientes más significativos. Asimismo, aludiremos a las medidas legales aprobadas para garantizar su protección y a las posibilidades de acometer su modificación. Finalmente, describiremos la incidencia que la autorregulación del sector ha supuesto en esta materia.

For the running of a computer it is necessary, as is known, not only the hardware but also the software. This could be of various forms, namely proprietary software or free software. The latter must be discerned of relatively similar figures which tend to get confused. In this paper, we refer to the concept of free software and the movement in which it integrates, without losing sight of its most significant advantages and disadvantages. It will also be discussed the legal measures adopted to ensure their protection, and the possibilities of undertaking any modification. Finally, we will describe the impact that has resulted as a consecuence of the self regulation that exists in this industry.
