La muerte y la religiosidad en el siglo XVI eran dos aspectos muy presentes en la vida cotidiana de la sociedad de la época. La preocupación por la salvación del alma era prácticamente constante, teniendo en cuenta los peligros que acechaban a la salud (peste, hambre, guerra). Por tanto, los testamentos, de obligado cumplimiento para aquél que tuviera algo que legar y tener un buen morir, constituyen una extraordinaria fuente documental para estudiar las creencias y devociones particulares. Al mismo tiempo, ofrecen información muy valiosa que permite conocer otros detalles de la vida privada de las personas. En este caso, nuestro objetivo es aproximarnos al concepto de la muerte regia femenina y analizar otros aspectos relacionados con la religiosidad y vida cotidiana de mujeres de la realeza en la Edad Moderna. Para ello, nos centraremos en los testamentos de algunas mujeres que formaron parte de la vida del emperador Carlos V, como su esposa Isabel de Portugal y su hermana Catalina de Austria. A través de sus últimas voluntades, descubrimos cuál fue la causa para redactar dichos escritos, a quiénes se encomendaban, cómo y dónde querían ser enterradas, qué relación tenían con los miembros de su familia y su servicio, qué bienes legaban, etc.

Death and religiosity in the 16th century were two aspects very present in the society daily life of that time. The concern for the soul salvation was constant, because of all the different dangers in life (plague, famine, war). Therefore, the wills were compulsory for everyone who had something to bequeath and wanted to have a good death. For that reason, they are an extraordinary documentary source to study the beliefs and private devotions. At the same time, they also offer valuable information that allows to know other details of people’s private life. In this case, our goal is to approach the concept of female death in royalty and other aspects related to religion and daily life of royal women in the early modern period. To do so, we focus in the wills of some women related to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, as his wife Isabella of Portugal and his sister Catherine of Austria. Through their last wills, we have found out what was the cause to write them, their devotions, how and where they wanted to be buried, which relationship they had with members of their family and their service, what goods they had, etc.
