El presente estudio pretende aportar una nueva visión acerca de la necesidad de justifi - cación de las pretensiones de Felipe II al trono portugués, basadas en dictámenes de prestigiosos juristas y teólogos de la época, así como la inmediata reacción del Ayuntamiento de Sevilla y otras instituciones locales vinculadas a la ciudad. Estas, sobre las que recaía la jurisdicción de amplias extensiones de terrenos fronterizos, al conocer tales argumentos tomaron parte activa en la política fi lipina encaminada a la agregación del país vecino mediante una serie de medidas tanto jurídicas como factuales que contribuyeron al desenlace de los hechos y que repercutieron jurídicamente en sectores infl uyentes de la población asentada en la ciudad.

 

The present aims to provide a new vision about the need for justification of the claims of Philip II to the Portuguese throne, based on opinions of renowned jurists and theologians of the time, and the immediate reaction of the Seville City Council and other local institutions linked to the city. These, on which rested the jurisdiction of large areas of border lands, knowing such arguments took active part in the Philippine policy to incorporate the neighbouring country through a series of both legal and factual measures that contributed to the outcome of the facts and had a legal effect on influential sectors of the population settled in the city.
