John Stuart Mill en su célebre obra On Liberty esbozó dos modelos de tolerancia,muy distintos entre sí, para defender la libertad según se refi riera ésta a la elección del modo devida o a la expresión y publicación de ideas. Para lo primero, el pensador articuló lo que se hoyse denomina tolerancia moral-liberal, de acuerdo a la tipología de Rafael del Águila. Para losegundo –la libre expresión y publicación de ideas-, Mill dio forma en cambio a una toleranciadesde el escepticismo. Este artículo indaga ambos modelos de tolerancia: las razones y límites delos ámbitos de libertad que conllevan. Por lo mismo, se intenta analizar la relación entre las dostolerancias. Es una relación íntima, no exenta de problemas, y que nos revela algo esencial sobrecómo mitigar la presión social que la mayoría puede llegar a ejercer sobre las minorías.

In his classic work On Liberty John Stuart Mill distinguished two very different kindsof toleration in order to defend the freedom anybody has to choice its way of life and the freedomto express and publish ideas. As to the fi rst, the thinker developed what is now known as moralliberaltoleration, according to the typology elaborated by Professor Rafael del Aguila. As forthe second, i.e. the liberty of expression and publication, Mill developed the so-called tolerationfrom skepticism. This article is about these two models of toleration. I analyze the reasons andlimits of the spheres of freedom they involve. Furthermore, I try to analyze the close and somehowproblematic relationship existing between both types of toleration. This relationship mattersbecause it reveals something essential about how to alleviate the social pressure that the majoritycan make on minorities.
