Este artículo discute el uso político del interés general como una característica innata de la acción política y administrativa. Se destacan ciertas incoherencias teóricas en la definición del interés general, a menudo confundido con voluntad general o bienestar colectivo. De hecho, se pone en cuestión la posible conceptualización del interés general como un concepto normativo. A nuestro parecer, el interés general debe considerarse un recurso dentro del proceso de políticas públicas con el que los diferentes actores, tanto públicos como privados, buscan legitimar sus intereses y su posición en la toma de decisiones.

This article discusses the political use of public interest as an innate characteristic of the political and administrative action. Theoretical inconsistencies are highlighted in the defi nition of general interest that is often confused with general or collective welfare. Infact, the possible conceptualization of general interest as a normative concept is questioned. In our view, the public interest should be considered a resource in the public policy process, in which different actors, both public and private, seek to legitimize their interests and their position in the decision-making.
